How a Clinic Opens on Time: Project Management in Healthcare Construction

Four clinics, four budgets, one opening date each. What building healthcare spaces teaches about schedule, scope and handoff.

A clinic cannot open "mostly ready." Patients need working rooms, equipment, staff and permits on the same day. That makes clinic construction a wonderful classroom for project management.

Four clinics, one pattern

When I managed the construction, implementation and early operation of four psychiatry clinics, with budgets between $1.0M and $1.65M, the pattern was the same each time: the building is only half the project. The other half is getting everything and everyone ready to operate.

What matters most

  • Scope clarity. Everyone agrees on what "done" means before the first wall goes up.
  • Contractor coordination. Many trades, one sequence, one source of truth.
  • Early operations planning. Staffing, supplies and systems are scheduled like construction tasks.
  • A real closeout. Punch lists, documentation and a clean handoff to operations.

The handoff is where projects die

Projects often finish construction and stumble at turnover. Treat handoff as its own workstream from day one, with an owner and a checklist.

A project is not finished when the work is finished. It is finished when someone else can run it.

The same idea applies to any business launching a new location, product or service: plan the opening, not just the build.
